Why do humans enjoy a hot bowl of soup/stew/chilli on a dark, cold, rainy autumn day?

Why is it when it's dark, cold, wet, rainy out (usually autumn) people enjoy eating say, french onion soup, or chicken and dumplings or a bowl of chilli?
